Getting Started

Your First Submission

A step-by-step walkthrough of submitting a document and seeing your results.

Your First Submission

Let's walk through the entire process end-to-end. By the end of this guide, you'll have submitted a document, watched it get processed, and seen the extracted results. The whole thing takes about two minutes.

Step 1: Go to Submissions

From your dashboard, click Submissions in the left sidebar. This is where all your processed documents live.

Click the New Submission button in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Upload Your Document

You have two options:

  • Drag and drop a file onto the upload area
  • Click to browse and select a file from your computer

Doculent accepts PDFs and common image formats. For best results, use a clear, legible document — think scanned forms, not photos taken at an angle.

Trying this for the first time? Use any PDF document you have handy. A sample insurance form, a scanned application, even a receipt — Doculent will extract whatever structured information it can find.

Step 3: Select a Channel

Choose which channel should process this document. If you only have one channel set up, it will be selected automatically.

Not sure what channels are? Think of them as processing pipelines — each one can have its own rules for how documents are handled. You can learn more in What Are Channels?

Step 4: Submit and Watch

Click Submit. That's it from your end.

Behind the scenes, here's what happens next:

  1. Classification — Doculent identifies what type of document you uploaded
  2. Extraction — AI reads the document and pulls out all the key fields
  3. Validation — The extracted data gets checked against quality rules
  4. Delivery — Results are sent to your configured destination

You can watch this happen in real time on the submission detail page. Each step shows a status indicator so you always know where things stand.

Step 5: Review Your Results

Once processing is complete, you'll see the extracted data laid out in a clean, organized view:

  • Extracted fields — All the key information pulled from your document, organized by category
  • Confidence scores — How confident Doculent is about each piece of extracted data
  • Original document — The source document right there for easy reference

If any field was flagged for review (maybe a value looked unusual or a required field was hard to read), you'll see it highlighted so you can quickly verify it.

What Happens to the Results?

Depending on how your channel is configured, the extracted data can be:

  • Viewed in the dashboard — always available in the Submissions section
  • Sent to a webhook — pushed to your existing systems automatically
  • Added to a Google Sheet — appended as a new row in your spreadsheet

You can set up delivery options in Webhook Setup or Google Sheets Setup.

You Did It!

That's the core workflow. Most of the time, documents arrive by email and get processed automatically — you only need to step in when something needs review.
